Ensembles

I currently perform with several jazz groups, including my own combo. In August 2025 the Tom Johnson Jazz Orchestra began performing live at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis.

Tom Johnson Small Band(s) and Big Band

Solo Piano In November 2022 I started doing solo piano gigs, predominantly for fund raisers. I have played for the American Cancer Society Discovery Ball in Indianapolis 3 times since 2022.

Small Groups I have perofrmed with a piano trio and small combos with 1 to 3 horns. I formed a jazz sextet (Trumpet, Tenor, Trombone & Rhythm section) back in 2019 and we did one performance before COVID shut things down. (See below for one tune from that performance. This version of the band featured myself on keyboards, Skyler Floe on trumpet, Armand Sangalang on tenor, Duane Caperton on trombone, Eric Schatz on bass, and Jonah Reel on drums.)

For information on availability email me at tom.johnson@indstate.edu or call (812) 236-8037. I also am forming a 7 piece ensemble that plays a mix of originals and standards ranging in style from Great American Songbook tunes and jazz versions of pop tunes, to hard bop, cool jazz, soul jazz and various Latin and Fusion styles, plus arrangements from contemporary groups such as Snarky Puppy and Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat Band. We can do several variations on smaller groups as well (trios, quartets, etc.).

BIg Band The Tom Johnson Jazz Orchestra had its first live performance at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis on August 26, 2025. The band features original charts and arrangements of jazz standards. The style of my charts runs from Basie style swing through 70s-90s jazz fusion and on to contemporary grooves and sounds (and occasional turns to Third Stream).

The Men of Note

The Men of Note band has been playing in west central Indiana for decades. The band book contains over 400 charts by the founder, the late Bill Fullweiler. The band features tunes from the Big Band era and the Great American Songbook. Recent performances have included fundraisers for the Terre Haute Symphony and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
